About Us

Our Philosophy

Ours is an open, moving, evolving concept of living Judaism. Har Sinai Temple functions as an extended family, warm, friendly and open-minded. We are dedicated to continuing the traditions of our faith and serving the religious needs of the growing Reform Jewish community in Mercer and Bucks counties. Founded in 1857, we are the oldest congregation in the area --and at the same time the youngest-continuing to respond in a dynamic, creative manner to our members' needs. We are large enough to offer a full program, yet small enough to know each other's names. Nationally, we are affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism. We offer varied programs and social activities for youth and adults; we continue to explore new areas for growth as an outstanding congregation. We welcome newcomers to join us at our High Holy Day, Holiday and Shabbat Services, to attend our social events, to participate in our Holiday observances, Adult Education, Outreach, Social Action and other programs.

As A House of Worship

During our transition, Shabbat Services are held every Friday evening and on Saturday morning at Ahavath Israel Synagogue in Trenton, NJ. Led by our Rabbi and Cantor, they are conducted in an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness. The Oneg Shabbat following is an ideal time for making new friends and enjoying the company of familiar acquaintances. Family Services, led by our students, are held monthly. Gates of Prayer is used for Shabbat and Gates of Repentance is used for the Holy Days. We are also pleased to announce that Mishkan T’Filah, the Union for Reform Judaism’s new standard prayer book, will be phased in in the near future. The Service is a warm blend of the traditional and the contemporary with emphasis on congregational participation.

Who Can Join

Membership is open to families and individuals seeking an affiliation with a Reform Jewish Synagogue. Annual dues are based on standards established by the Board of Trustees.

Decision Making

Our leadership consists of a group of dedicated officers and trustees. Board meetings held monthly are open to all members. Our various Congregational committees and our Sisterhood also provide opportunities for leadership, participation and service.

Mission Statement

MISSION STATEMENT

Har Sinai Hebrew Congregation, founded in 1857 in Trenton, New Jersey, is a Reform Jewish Congregation, affiliated with the URJ, serving the greater Delaware Valley.

We are an inclusive congregation welcoming all who wish to learn about Judaism, teach it to their children, and live a Jewish life.

We are dedicated to fulfilling the historic covenant between God and the Jewish People. We seek to infuse the timeless teachings of Torah into our daily lives. Ours is an open, moving and evolving concept of living Judaism.

We seek to provide a sense of community (hevruta) among our members, to enhance Jewish family life and culture, and to promote the practice of Jewish values and mitzvot, social action and social justice in our daily lives, at home, at work, and in our community.

We take pride in our congregational history and longevity which reflects the congregation’s ability to respond to a changing world in creative and constructive ways.

We support the traditional functions of our Synagogue as a House of Assembly, Study, and Worship.

We recognize Israel as a center for Jewish spiritual and cultural life and affirm our link to the land of Israel and its people. As members of World Jewry (K’lal Yisrael), we are dedicated to the well being of Jews everywhere.
